HI SOUND COMPACT FIELD RECORDING
Here is a preview of my latest video, where I explore field recording with the Dodotronic Hi-Sound Compact parabolic microphone mounted on a Sony Alpha 7 III mirrorless camera. Lightweight and easy to install, this device captures sound coming from a specific direction. It improves the audio quality of video recordings by reducing unwanted background noise and enhancing the desired sound sources. Its directional design makes it especially useful in noisy environments or outdoor locations, delivering clear and precise audio with a simple and practical setup.
GIARDINI HANBURY
My exploration of the sounds of nature continues. In this project, I was involved in creating a sound map of the Hanbury Botanical Gardens, a truly unique place where plants from different regions of the world have found their natural habitat. An analysis of the garden’s acoustic environment also revealed the noticeable presence of urban sounds surrounding the area. However, these did not prevent me from creating an accurate and detailed soundscape. Recording at dawn and sunset, when traffic was more limited, allowed me to build an archive featuring several bird species. These were later identified and catalogued with the collaboration of Rudy Valfiorito, an environmental hiking guide, expert ornithologist and naturalist.
THE NOISE GAME
Any objects that have mechanical movement are great for contact microphones. In this video entitled The noise game, I attack the microphones where there is friction of gears and beyond. Two Schertler UNI-P48 close together to play with EQ and stereophony. The captured sound will be processed and cleaned later. To integrate the sound I used a sennheiser mkh416 in the studio with various metal objects to complete the sound and sync with the images. When I make these videos that I share pleasantly on my You Tube channel, I archive a part of the captured sounds to create sound libraries that will have various fields of use..
ARTHUR PRIME 5
A new companion has arrived on my desk: the ARTHUR PRIME 5. Thanks to this mixer, I can manage several microphones when recording sound effects and much more. The quality of its preamps is undeniable, allowing me to maintain excellent recording levels without introducing unwanted noise. Every piece of equipment plays an important role in the recording studio when the goal is to achieve professional-quality results. In this clip, the ARTHUR PRIME 5 was used with a Sennheiser MKH 416 and two DYN-UNI-P48 contact microphones.
SCHERTLER DYN UNI P 48 SPOT
For this video, I decided to use a musical instrument that I built myself and often use to create sound effects. I positioned two SCHERTLER DYN-UNI-P48 contact microphones on different areas of the instrument, carrying out several tests to find the most suitable frequencies for this particular sound. A Sennheiser MKH 416 pointed towards the instrument added further colour and depth. I used two DYN-UNI-P48 microphones so that I could process them independently, focusing on the mid and low frequencies with one and the higher frequencies with the other. Cubase has been my main DAW for many years, and for sound effects I often use its built-in plug-ins, including REVerence, Limiter and Frequency. When necessary, I rely on iZotope RX 10 to remove unwanted background noise, although it must always be used with caution. The video was filmed using a Sony Alpha 7 III camera body and a Laowa lens for the macro shots.
