ROMAN EXCAVATIONS

ROMAN EXCAVATIONS

CITY EXCAVATIONS

We are in the area of a large Christian cemetery that developed near the northern walls of Albintimilium between the fifth and sixth centuries AD. The site is extremely extensive and contains different types of burials. At its centre are ten large stone sarcophagi which, during the period when Ventimiglia was a Byzantine stronghold, represented the most important type of tomb and belonged to what we might describe as the upper class of the city at that time.

SIEVING

Sieving the soil in search of pottery shards and bone fragments.

STRATIGRAPHIC UNIT

Excavation of a stratigraphic unit. It was probably a tomb, so this specific area is being excavated to determine the depth and position of its base. No skeleton has yet been found. In this case, there is a good chance of finding one, although nothing is certain.

PICKAXE

The stratigraphy is exposed to make the different layers more clearly visible. The pickaxe is used to straighten and define the excavation wall.

CLEANING WITH A BRUSH

Cleaning and selecting stones and fragments of sixth-century AD amphorae.

ROMAN EXCAVATIONS

A short sound documentary recorded during the Roman archaeological excavations in the city of Ventimiglia. All sounds were captured close to the source using a Tascam DR-44WL recorder and a RØDE NTG4+ microphone. Audio editing was completed in Cubase Pro.
