On Thursday, 12 September, I had the pleasure of bringing the sound of bees to Forte dell’Annunziata in Ventimiglia during a conference where a Roman vase from the collections of the Civic Museum was presented. The event included contributions from Daniela Gandolfi, followed by Fabrizio Zagni of Api Liguria. A short video that I created was also screened, featuring images by Fabio De Montis of lovetales.it, filmed at Yann Ballestra’s apiary in Sasso, Bordighera. Yann kindly allowed me to approach his hives with my microphones. It was a wonderful opportunity to explore the incredible world of bees in greater depth. To organise the recording process, I first captured the ambience surrounding the hive. I then recorded the sound created when the honey super was opened: feeling threatened, the bees became agitated and produced an extraordinary sound. The final recording was made inside the hive, with the built-in microphones of the Tascam DR-44WL fully inserted.
